Zoox recalls 258 self-driving cars for braking issues

techcrunch.com

Zoox, a self-driving car unit of Amazon, is recalling 258 vehicles due to a problem with its driving system. The issue could lead to unexpected hard braking. This recall follows an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that started last May. The NHTSA received reports of two accidents where motorcyclists crashed into the back of Zoox vehicles. The incidents occurred while the vehicles were running on their autonomous systems. Zoox has said the recall only affects vehicles that have software versions released before November 5, 2024. The company reported that it fixed the problem with a software update by November 7, 2024. It is unclear if other Zoox vehicles, such as its custom robotaxis, are impacted by this issue. Currently, Zoox is testing these robotaxis in San Francisco and Las Vegas. The recall comes in a time of increased scrutiny for autonomous vehicles. A similar recall occurred last year when Waymo recalled 672 Jaguar I-Pace robotaxis after multiple safety incidents.
